Huge thank you to our friends at Jonesville Lumber!! Their donation is keeping two construction classes busy at the High School. Our classes at JHS learn about power tools, then use that learning to build a dimensional lumber project with materials provided by Jonesville Lumber. Students are building benches, tables, or whatever else they came up with. Next week we will begin to learn the process of building a shed. Then we build sheds! As of this posting, we have two clients lined up for sheds. We have room for up to 4 more. Email Jeff Dice if you are interested: jdice@jonevilleschools.org. Or text him at 989-246-4298.

Congratulations are in order for some of our athletic teams as we enter state competition! Our Competitive Cheer team qualified for the Regional meet tomorrow, Feb 24, at Michigan Center High School with a top four finish in the District competition. The Regional competition starts at 10:00 am and tickets must be purchased through GoFan.co per MHSAA guidelines. One member of the Comet wrestling team, Evan McColley, a senior, qualified for the individual state wrestling meet on March 1 at Ford Field in Detroit. Evan finished in 3rd place at the Regional meet last weekend to qualify. Our Comet Bowling teams have been ranked all year in the state. The girls team is currently ranked 1st in Division 4 and the boys team is currently ranked 2nd in Division 4. Today, at the Regional team competition at Jax 60, it was the girls team winning the regional and the boys finishing 2nd. Both teams have qualified for the state finals next weekend in Muskegon. Tomorrow the teams return to Jax 60 for the Regional singles competition that starts at 9:00am. Tickets must be purchased through GoFan.co per MHSAA guidelines. Great job Comets! Best of luck in your quest for a state title!

Students in National Park Science elective made stalagmites and stalactites to resemble the formations in Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota. We super saturated a water solution with Epsom salts (by heating the water and dissolving the substance). We are watching as the water evaporates over the next few days to see if we get some cave like formations. We hope to zoom with park rangers soon.

This week, Miss Halcomb's classes worked on writing letters to someone in their family for Valentine's Day. Students made rough drafts of their letters, edited them, and made final drafts. Then, students worked on addressing envelopes, and counting change to buy their own stamp at the post office to mail them home!

In our National Park Science elective course, our students were able zoom with a National Park ranger from Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah! Ranger Alicia talked to us about the geology of the canyon. (Actually it is not a canyon, it is an amphitheater. A canyon is made by moving water, like a river. The amphitheater was made from several processes including freeze thaw weathering.) She told us how the wonderful formations came to be. She also talked to us about the emblem of the National Parks and what each element stood for. It was quite interesting to see the park and hear her talk. We also had some time at the end of the session to ask questions.
