Weekly Update For 12/13/21

Dear JMS Parents,

Here are the important dates and information for the week:

  • We are planning for a full week this week.  Barring any unforeseen circumstances, there will not be a virtual day this week.

  • M-F will all be full days this week.  Christmas break starts after school is dismissed at 2:40 on Friday.  School will resume on Monday, January 3rd, 2022.

  • Holiday dress up days listed below, in case you want to start preparing!

    • Monday 13th - Dress up as Santa or a Christmas Tree

    • Tuesday 14th - Ugly Sweater Day

    • Wednesday 15th - Christmas PJ Day (dress code appropriate)

    • Thursday 16th - Christmas Movie Character Day

    • Friday 17th  - 8th Grade Red, 7th Grade Green, and 6th Grade white, silver, and gold.

  • I did go around and speak to all the classrooms this week about the events that have been happening surrounding the shooting at Oxford and the subsequent threats that have followed.  The main points of the message were:

    • If you see something destructive, disturbing, or dangerous, say something.  The sooner the better.  Report it to any school employee or a parent...it can be as simple as an email, that way they don’t draw attention to themselves, or even have to get out of their seat.  It can also be reported anonymously via the OK2SAY.com website.

    • At some point, real world consequences are going to happen.  For instance, you may slap someone here and get a two day suspension, but if you did that at WalMart, you’d be leaving in a police car.

    • Words are important and have consequences as well.  Like Erik said in his email, if you say “I have a bomb” on an airplane, you’re going to be dealing with a Federal Marshal, and they’re not going to care that it was “just a joke.”  If you come in to school and make a threat of violence against anyone or threaten, shooting, killing, or carrying out any act of terrorism, you’re going to be immediately detained, searched, investigated, and the police are going to be called as well as the county prosecutor.  These words aren’t funny, and your words HAVE CONSEQUENCES that will be dealt with on a much higher level than the school.  You will be arrested and charged.

    • Be nice to everyone.  I don’t need you to become everyone’s best friend, I just don’t want you to be mean to anyone.  Be nice.

    • If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call the school at 517-849-3210.

  • This trimester, tardies will be enforced, per the handbook:

    • Four unexcused tardies to a class during a twelve-week marking period will result in a verbal warning, conference with the principal, and parent notification.  The fifth, sixth and seventh unexcused tardy to a class during a twelve-week marking period will result in the student serving a lunch detention.  Upon reaching an eighth tardy to a class during a twelve-week marking period, the student will receive a four hour Saturday detention.

  • Sports:

    • Cheerleading:

Wednesday, Dec. 15th, Home (MS/HS Winter Classic) @ 5:30PM

Saturday, Dec. 18th, Away at Onsted @ 2:00PM

  • Boys wrestling practice starts tomorrow, Monday, the 13th.  You need to contact the coaches immediately if you plan on playing.

  • Girls basketball will start practicing after Christmas break.  You will need to make sure you have a physical and are signed up in order to practice when we return from break.

  • After school tutoring and athletic study hall will be available every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:50-3:50.  Any student wishing to attend may show up as long as they bring work.  Athletes will know in advance if they must attend.  *Students cannot remain in the school past 4pm, and should have transportation available after tutoring.

  • If your child is absent from school due to an illness or appointment, please call the office in the morning and let us know 517-849-3210.

  • Students who are quarantined are required to complete all classwork while they are away from school.  Your teacher should have Google Classroom or Schoology set up to deliver all assignments and instruction.  Failure to complete assignments on time will result in a lowered grade.  If you are sick, please let your teacher know so an exception can be.

  • During sporting events, please talk with your child and remind them to stay off of the baseball and softball fields.  This is especially problematic during football games.  There is an area behind the bleachers where the students can play.  We are trying to keep the softball fields from any damage during construction.

  • Masks are optional in school, however, if you ride the bus, they are required the entire time you are on the bus.
